Johnson purchased a small lot when he started work on the Glass House in 1945, but the parcel grew to 49 acres and became a laboratory for artistic expression. While it's a museum now, not a home, almost all the furniture is exactly as it was when Johnson lived there. The house is small, just 1,815 square feet of open-plan design (a common home layout now, but a rarity in the 1940s), containing dining room, kitchen, living room, bathroom, bedroom, and study. And perhaps its greatest magic trick is how expansive it all feels, thanks to the surrounding landscape on all four sides, which is just as much a part of the home as the interior. Inspired by Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House, the Glass House by Philip Johnson, with its perfect proportions and its simplicity, is considered one of the first most brilliant works of modern architecture.

The pastoral 49-acre landscape comprises the midcentury modern Glass House (1949) as well as fourteen structures- follies, outdoor sculptures and more, and features a permanent collection of 20th-century painting and sculpture. The campus serves as a catalyst for the preservation and interpretation of modern architecture, lart, and andscape, and a canvas for inspiration and experimentation. The tour season runs from April through November and advance reservations are required. The pastoral 49-acre landscape comprises fourteen structures, including the Glass House (1949), and features a permanent collection of renowned 20th century painting and sculpture, along with temporary exhibitions. The campus serves as a catalyst for the preservation and interpretation of modern architecture, landscape, and art; and a canvas for inspiration and experimentation.

For much of his adult life he wielded great influence on the field of architecture and maintained his interest in the work of others until the end of his life. Originally a curator, he never lost that desire to present new and evolving ideas in architecture, design and art. Today, the Glass House carries on that mindset by presenting innovative programming in the arts within the framework of 21st-century culture, which is far more diverse and inclusive than in Johnson’s time. The best option is the three-hour "self-guided" tour available on Sundays only, which costs $75 and gives you free reign to wander through all the buildings and across the grounds at your own pace. Over the decades, Johnson added acreage to the property and continued to design and construct small-scale, almost jewel-box buildings and structures on the land.

He was also responsible for the Sculpture Garden at the Museum of Modern Art, where he served as the first director of the architecture department in 1930, and to which he donated some 2,200 works from his personal art collection over the course of his lifetime.

Since his early days visiting the Bauhaus, Johnson had been an admirer of Breuer’s with whom Johnson also studied while at Harvard. Breuer had joined a number of his former Bauhaus colleagues under Walter Gropius’s leadership at Harvard following their departures from Germany in the late 1930s. I found a great oak tree and I hung a whole design on the oak tree and the knoll because of this place.

One wing of the house contained a den, living room, dining room, and kitchen, while the other wing contained a master bedroom and bath, and two children’s bedrooms. The Wiley Development Corporation offered to build the prototype anywhere in Fairfield County for $45,000, but the Wiley Speculative House was never reproduced. Following his time in the military, Johnson elected to come to New York rather than return to Cambridge, Massachusetts and began looking at property as early as late 1945, purchasing his initial five acres of property in New Canaan in 1946. He would spend the next few years developing the design of the Glass House, completing the two main structures in 1949. Exactly at this time Johnson would become familiar with Mies’s design for the Farnsworth House, a weekend home outside of Chicago for Dr. Edith Farnsworth.
The Glass House stylistically is a mixture of Mies van der Rohe, Malevich, the Parthenon, the English garden, the whole Romantic Movement, the asymmetry of the 19th century. In other words, all these things are mixed up in it but basically it is the last of the modern, in the sense of the historic way we treat modern architecture today, the simple cube. Since its completion in 1949, the building and decor have not strayed from their original design.
There has always been a suspicion that so complex a figure as Johnson demands yet a different kind of analytical approach to this work. She admits the risk of seating the architecture on the couch as a substitute for its author, but for her, the house is a repository packed with architectural signs of envy, a sense of inadequacy, deferral, and the burial of memory. Out of this exploration, she has constructed a fascinating and often penetrating narrative that allows us to see Johnson’s Glass House as a deeply layered expression of his own psyche. Still, the house is a deliberate transformation, rather than imitation, of Mies’s aesthetic.
The glass walls and other intriguing features of the dwelling inspired psychoanalyst Adele Tutter to go beyond the usual architectural analysis to a psychological one. Johnson would trudge across the field to his Studio in all seasons--he kept the grass uncut, because he liked the way the grassy hills rippled in the wind--and though the space is air-conditioned, a fireplace provides the only warmth in the winter. Like all of his buildings here, starting with Glass House, it feels as sculptural as much as a work of architecture.
Day is the first artist the Glass House has invited to reinterpret the building, originally intended as a visitor center and now used as a project space for contemporary art. Johnson’s style took a final turn with the New York City AT&T Building (1984; it was later sold and renamed). Designed with a top resembling a Chippendale cabinet, the building was considered by critics to be a landmark in the history of postmodern architecture. Johnson turned explicitly to the 18th century for his design of the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture at the University of Houston (1983–85); it was based on unexecuted plans published by the French architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux.
Tucked out of sight in then rural Fairfield County, Johnson and his partner, curator David Whitney, purchased a five-acre parcel of land in 1945. By 1949, Johnson had built the Glass House on a promontory with views of the surrounding forest. Measuring 56 feet long, 32 feet wide, and 10.5 feet high, the open floor plan has no enclosed spaces except for a large brick cylinder to the right of the entrance, which extends slightly through the flat roof.
Guest curator Jordan Stein organized this unfolding sculpture exhibition, held in the same spot where Giacometti’s Night once stood, over the course of three years. On display for three to six months at a time, the individual works presented in Night (1947 – 2015) each “disappear” after their run, making room for new works and new absences. Tours of the entire property are available and begin from the visitor’s center in downtown New Canaan. Those interested in Johnson’s influences should check out the similarly-designed Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois, that is also constructed of mostly steel and glass.
The Glass House has and will continue to engage in frank dialogue and open exchange about all aspects of its history, including Philip Johnson’s own history, and to work diligently to expand inclusivity in all aspects of our programming and operations. From 1921 to 1922, Jane Berry Smith donated funds to build a theological dormitory, a science hall, a teachers' cottage, a memorial gate, and an endowment in memory of her late husband, Johnson C. Smith. She later donated funds for five more buildings and a campus church. The school focuses on educating Black women and women of color, valuing civic engagement, leadership, and innovation. Established in 1867, FSU boasts about 6,000 students and regional accreditation from the SACSCOC. Located in North Carolina, the school is part of the University of North Carolina System. "I didn't do it as a student, but I did it as a professional and it was, you know, some of my fondest memories are working on that campus and helping connect students," Portlock said. Portlock said some students he talks to only have HBCUs on their list of possible colleges, like Mallard Creek High School senior Gabriel Orina. "Everything that we're doing is to try to expose them to different pathways to reach college," Portlock said. Livingston boasts as many female athletes as male athletes and, like many of the HBCU peers in our state, it is home to the Divine Nine Black sororities and fraternities. It is the only HBCU to offer culinary arts and hospitality programs. The school owns a Holiday Inn, which gives hospitality students hands-on experience. JCSU students enjoy its innovative programs that merge liberal arts with business and STEM. Founded in 1879, Livingstone College provides a Christian-based and learner-centered educational environment.
Philip Johnson was an early admirer of Stella, and he avidly collected the artist’s work throughout his life. When Johnson donated the Glass House property to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, he specifically outlined his wish to feature Stella’s artwork at the Glass House. Visitors to the Scarlatti Kirkpatrick exhibit will find a rich context in which they can see the trajectory of the artist’s career, as earlier Stella works from Johnson’s personal collection now hang in the Glass House’s Painting Gallery.

Mies’s Barcelona furniture is placed in front of Nicolas Poussin’s The Burial of Phocion (1648–1649). In between the dining area and open kitchen stands Elie Nadelman’s sculpture Two Circus Women (1930). A closet behind the Poussin separates the living space from the sleeping area. The Glass House itself is stunning, but there are many other features on the property worth visiting.

Neither repaired nor replaced, Night’s absence from the Glass House still lingers like a ghost of Modernism past. It’s hard to imagine living in a transparent box, but Philip Johnson not only lived there but he also designed and created it. Tours of the entire property are available and begin from the visitor’s center in downtown New Canaan. Those interested in Johnson’s influences should check out the similarly-designed Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois, that is also constructed of mostly steel and glass.

You never know how available parking spaces will be, and you don’t want to drive around to find a place to park and miss your tour time. All children must be at least ten years old to participate in tours, and an adult must accompany them. Car seat regulations prevent the transportation of younger children to and from the Glass House via shuttle bus. The residence Johnson built for himself in 1949 suggests a life pared down to Platonic essentials—and triumphantly ready for fishbowl scrutiny. There is something intimidating to people about the restraint such an existence would demand, as if the house itself were silently judging our own messy choices. Still, the appeal of all that self-control, that rigor, is practically narcotic.
As Johnson’s signature work, he continued to add on to the property for 60 years. Philip Johnson’s Glass House, built atop a dramatic hill on a rolling 47-acre estate in New Canaan, Connecticut, is a piece of architecture famous the world over not for what it includes, but for what it leaves out. The dwelling’s transparency and ruthless economy are meant to challenge nearly every conventional definition of domesticity. Right nearby, just past Julian Schnabel's Ozymandias (Johnson saw this enormous piece on display in the plaza outside the Seagram Building in 1989, and immediately bought it from the artist), is the Sculpture Gallery. This features an interior inspired by the villages of the Greek islands, and multiple staircases leading to landings and bays holding works by the likes of Robert Rauschenberg, George Segal, Bruce Nauman, and John Chamberlain.
The Glass House is a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Self-guided tours are available on Sundays from April through October. Each office has a solid infill wall of light grey iron spot brick on the interior corridor pierced by full height, cabinetry-quality doors made of oak. It is now owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is open to the public for guided tours, which begin at a visitors center at 199 Elm Street in New Canaan. As a historic site owned and operated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Glass House serves as a catalyst for the preservation and interpretation of modern architecture, landscape, and art, and as a canvas for inspiration and experimentation. Consistent with earlier statements by the National Trust and the Glass House, and as an acknowledgement of the Johnson Study Group concerns, we assert without equivocation that racism and fascism do not reflect the values of our organization. With equal conviction, we believe that historic sites must serve as powerful spaces for learning, reflection, and truth-telling.
The interior is open with the space divided by low walnut cabinets; a brick cylinder contains the bathroom and is the only object to reach floor-to-ceiling. Upon arrival at the Glass House, visitors will immediately encounter Day’s reinterpretation of Da Monsta. Responding to Philip Johnson’s statement that “the building is alive,” Day boldly casts a series of massive red nets across its undulating volume, capturing and staking Da Monsta to the ground. After entering Da Monsta, visitors first see individual sculptures by Day, including Spinneret (a study for Spidey Striptease), 2008; Wet Net, 2009; Pollinator, 2011; and Bandage Dress (white with chain), 2012. Once viewers enter the second gallery, they encounter a dramatic, site-specific installation that explores the expressive contours of Da Monsta with a deconstructed Herve Leger Bandage dress deployed as an architectural element.
Yet the residence was built near the end of his love affair with modernism; if you look closely, you can see signs of his budding restlessness with its dogma. Johnson liked to say that he considered himself a historian first, a landscape artist second, and an architect by accident, and everything about the grounds at the Glass House estate is carefully planned. The brilliant patch of wildflowers between the Glass House and the Studio? And the miles of ancient-looking stone walls that crisscross the land?
The house, which ushered the International Style into residential American architecture, is iconic because of its innovative use of materials and its seamless integration into the landscape. Now known by locals as “The Philip Johnson Building,” or “PJB,” it’s a single-story, steel-glass-and-brick building constructed over an underground storage/garage. The rectangular plan consists of perimeter offices organized around a central core that contains an open-air landscaped courtyard, glass enclosed conference room and library. Around the central core is a wide, skylight-covered corridor allowing circulation between the perimeter offices and bringing abundant natural light throughout the space. The Schlumberger Research Center Administration Building was Philip Johnson’s first non-residential building, designed in 1951 and completed in 1952.
On Johnson’s property is his famous Glass House, which was completed in 1949. Johnson would trudge across the field to his Studio in all seasons--he kept the grass uncut, because he liked the way the grassy hills rippled in the wind--and though the space is air-conditioned, a fireplace provides the only warmth in the winter. Like all of his buildings here, starting with Glass House, it feels as sculptural as much as a work of architecture. But perhaps Johnson's most famous creation was his modestly-sized, 56' x 32' rectangle of a home in New Canaan, Connecticut, called Glass House. He built the home on what was then a five-acre plot of heavily forested land in 1949, and where he lived for the rest of his life (though he also had apartments in NYC and a home in Big Sur, California) with his partner David Whitney. Puerto Rico natives Matt and John Williams founded Rico’s Acai to bring vibrant, flavorful snacks and meal replacements to North Carolina. In addition to the truck, Rico’s has five brick-and-mortar locations in the Charlotte metro area. The union points out that Thomas Built, whose yellow school buses are a common sight, has benefited from millions of dollars in federal subsidies for electric buses. Thomas Built workers have earned less than counterparts at other factories, but the deal will give them pay increases to make up the deficit. Workers in North Carolina said they have been struggling to make ends meet while Daimler racked up big profits.
Detour Coffee Bar
This mobile coffee shop serves a variety of beverages made with Enderly Coffee, as well as teas, hot chocolate, and smoothies. Designed to mimic the style of an ambulance, Emergensweets is a family-owned dessert truck serving cheesecakes, ice cream, cobblers and more. Initially founded by Charlottean Willie Walters as a catering company, Sandra Lee’s Country Kitchen is now a go-to spot for Southern eats, including shrimp and grits, chicken bog and banana pudding. This truck specializes in “smashing” together different dishes to create original eats, most of which are centered around the grilled cheese. Known for serving the ultimate comfort food — chicken tenders and mac and cheese — Maria’s is a go-to spot for a big, hot bowl of gooey mac.
Now, chef and owner Hector González-Mora has launched a food truck at Resident Culture’s Plaza Midwood location. Feast on classic tacos, nachos, and loaded fries alongside your lager, or come on Saturday and Sunday mornings for some of his crazy-good breakfast tacos. Part grill, part creamery, this food truck slings hand-smashed patties, all-beef hot dogs, premium sausages and Italian gelato. Established in 2014, this food truck serves authentic banh mi with a side of welcoming service. The union had said it was ready to walk out if it could not agree on a new contract covering 7,300 Daimler employees.

The United Automobile Workers reached an 11th-hour deal on Friday with Daimler Truck in North Carolina that gave workers 25 percent raises over the next four years and averted a strike that would have begun Saturday. CMPD identified the Charlotte officer who died Monday as Joshua Eyer, a six-year veteran of the police department. "There were just an enormous amount of gunshots and people in our yard and people hiding behind vehicles. Firemen hiding behind firetrucks. It was wild," a neighbor who wanted to be identified only as Sarah told Fox News Digital.
